I'm
no expert, but below I have
detailed my tips to help you set
up a Smallholders Society / Group
in your area.

In no
particular order:
- Are
you sure that there isn't an existing
Group in your area already in
operation? If there is, what are their
particular interests and are they
different to your own?
- Is
there a need for a Group in your area?
For your Group to be successful you
need to be confident that you will be
able to attract sufficient members.
- Have
you identified the main aims and
purpose of the Group?
- What
will be the benefits to other
members?
- Bear
in mind costs that you will need to
cover - advertising and venue.
- What
subscription fee do you intend to
charge to cover the costs mentioned
above?
- Find
a venue for your Group to meet -
perhaps a local library, village hall,
or even the local pub to keep costs to
a minimum.
- Think
carefully about the time, day and
frequency that your Group will meet, as
this could have an impact on how many
people can and will attend.
- In
what form will the Group take place?
Will there be a chairperson/leader, or
will it be an open discussion?
- Promote
your new Group as cheaply as possible.
A few ideas that spring to mind are
cards in shop windows, local libraries,
community / village newsletters, and of
course, at Villageways
in the Organisations
Directory.
- Research
the Internet to find useful resources
and information for use at your Group
meetings.
- Oh,
and don't forget to choose a name for
your new Group.
- And
if you haven't already, please join the
Smallholders Forums - it will be a good
place for you to promote your new Group
and pick up ideas, ask for advice,
etc.
- It
might also be worth contacting
Smallholding Societies in other areas
for advice (take a look in the
Organisations
Directory).
Hope
you find the above information
helpful.
