Our hens are in their new living quaters, its an old wooden shed which was used as a breeding shed for rare breed chickens . its full of windows so its very light inside during the day. the hens have just started to lay again out of 40 hens we have had 10 eggs today as opposed to 3-4 eggs over the last few weeks.

Excellent! Where I used to live, my neighbour's chickens would come and visit me nearly every day, roughly at the same time - they would literally come and peck at the front door. I even missed them if they didn't pop round to see me. Blimey! I must be a right saddo :P

Ours have been ticking over nicely, despite the snow, hail and freezing temperatures.  We're getting about 3 a day from our 5 hens.  Everyone else's nearby seem to have stopped, but I don't think they feed them properly and their chicken accommodation may be somewhat below par.

We went to buy a cock on Xmas Eve, but the farmer had sold them all.  Hoping to get a batch of chicks under way as soon as possible.  Hopefully, he'll have a decent looking fella for us in a couple of weeks.

We breed our own laying hens rhode island x hybreds. We have the incubator for the winter hatchings. So they start laying in the summer and broodys do the summer hatchings for the winter laying birds that way we are never out of eggs. This year one of our broodys did some of the winter hatchigs!!! Globle warming is here !  She sat for three weeks rised them untill 6 weeks and went back into lay!! now that is a first for me. The hen is a cochin very calm and kind with lots of feathers to keep them all warm.  They free range and do thier own thing and we are happy to say it works.

Hi Wendy

When you have a mo to sort some pictures out, all you need to do is:
  • Underneath where you actually type your posting you'll see two boxes. One blank and the one next to it says 'Browse'
  • Click 'Browse' and select a picture you want to upload from your own pc.
Hope this helps,
Anita:D

With all this rain and the light not really getting started aroun 11:00 my chuks have stopped laying again, so Ive set up some lights on a timer to click on in the morning and hopefully kick start them into action again, its awful when you have customers waiting for eggs and you have to turn down the business.:(

Try beeding birds to lay at different times of the year.

Early dec jan hatchings lay in the summer

june july hatchings lay in the winter no need for extra lights they just lay to their body clock.

Eggs all the year round:)
