Hi all

I have a few acres which at the moment have horses on them. I want to keep , for meat , a few sheep and a couple of pigs.

It seems sheep are the least demanding so I'm going to start with these.

Has anyone got any good advice on the subject?

Cheers

Hi Alfie

Happy smallholding!  This my piont of view having kept pigs and sheep. Pigs are easier to keep than sheep they reach meat weight quicker and do not spend most of their time trying to kill themselves.  When I was starting out someone said to me sheep wake up in the morning thinking how can I kill myself today:? and belive me they were right. Pigs if housed and fenced right are a pleasure to keep they learn about electric fencing very quickly and stay within the boundry they are hardy and love you feeding them and rubbing their bellys if you take time to get to know them.(my theroy is while there with you make their life as happy as possible):)

Hi Alfie, good look we have had pigs for a while and as Wendy sais they are a pleasure to have. Id been advised off sheep for lots of reasons, also its cheap enough to buy a lamb from your local smallholder for you to take straight to the slaughter house. Dont forget chickens for eggs and meat also a couple of turkeys for christmas and easter. theres nothing like your own readr stock for flavour .
