Depends what you want out of them ? eggs or eggs & meat or pets ?
For just a good egg leyer then to be honest I'd go for a hybrid warren, nice little brown bird lays eggs all year round, has had nearly all tendancy to go broody bred out of them and they are very freindly and reasonably quite, I have had them in the past quite a few times and they have always been easy to tame, they soon get the idea that digging means goodies and sit on the spade or dive underneath as you dig 
At the momanet I have Rhode Island Red x Light Sussex they are good layers too little bit bigger bird and a bit noisier too.
