I'll start this new section of the off with my suggestions for old toothbrushes.

I find they are great little scrubbing brushes for spot stains on carpets, and also for cleaning hard-to-reach areas like grooves, around the bathroom taps, etc.

I found the Freecycle.org network a brilliant way to get rid of old stuff and acquire other things (for free). For instance, bubble wrap, mugs for our rabbit club (after our old ones were taken), school dresses for my little girl, baking tins, jam jars.

The idea is to save useful stuff from getting into landfill. There are lots of local freecycle groups in this country and you can sign up for any of them fro free.

Visit Freecyle (UK) and find a group near you!

I try to save as many things as possible, also I would like to think that I will also save money one way or another.

So it used to be that we would buy washing up liquid/ powder aswell as other cleaning stuffs.
Now we buy it in bulk and it saves us money as well as less packaging.

I've also trid to make my own soap,

We nowuse everything when we have got a chicken and that could last for 3 to 4 days. Roast 1 day, next salad, then soup and sandwiches you could even have loads of stock as well.

We try not to waste any food at our home we will use it all it it's not eaten by us and we just cant keep it any longer then it will go to the Dogs as a top up and then other bits goes to our chooks and they are all very happy.

But there are so many things that we can to save money and  not only that but save the planet at the same time.

Nick.

Hello everyone

What a good idea anita I also use old toothbrushes to clean out the chickens water containers they have hard to get at parts to them and the toothbrush gets into the places other scrubbing brushes can not. I have got my egg customers bring back their egg boxes so they can be used again, so I do not have to keep buying new ones;) This in turn keeps the egg prices down for them. We chop our own wood which we collect from the verges around Sandringham woods and if we see any piles of wood we ask the owners if they want it taking away and we have a huge stock pile now. The word has got out that we will get rid of any unwanted fallen trees and people get in-touch with us and we collect it. We have a wood burner that supplies all our hot water and central heating all free!!. The sawdust from the sewn wood goes into sacks for the poultry houses too. On a dry autumn day I rake up all the dead leaves and stack them loose in an old shed this also gets used for the poultry houses. Makes then smell nice too:cool:

Hi Wendy,

Free fuel! Can't beat that. Excellent!

Egg boxes - we always take ours back too! Every penny helps somewhere along the line :D

Hi Anita

Yes free fuel but !!  Be careful to get the right wood the wrong wood can destroy your chimney. I have wood poem which tells you the right wood to collect.  Do not want to bore you with it now but If you want to know it just ask.

We have also built all of our chicken houses for nothing. We collect  old pallets from companies close by who have to pay for them to be taken away,  they can not burn them so have to pay for a skip to take them away. A local shed company also needs wood taking away.

We now have 3 big sheds 9 chicken coups and a new tractor shed in the making all free wood:cool:  Pallet houses we have built have lasted 2 winters and stong winds so far.  Plans for the pallet houses could be supplied

For the nails visit building sites when they are clearing up and moving on they throw loads of nails away and all sorts of other things like sinks!!! they are only too pleased for you to take them saves them having to pay for them to be taken away and dumped. ;)

we are now looking for a roof for the tractor shed any ideas???

Byee
