| Hubby and I are discussing getting rid of the TV. Has anyone else done it?

| I would love to get rid of the TV , spend less time sitting down wasteing time watching rubbish on the telly. but OH cant do without her soaps and reality shows, so there's no chance in the near future of getting rid. Also the cost of watching tv is disgusting, we have sky which is costing £55 per month, but I must admit we are getting rid of the sky subscription at the end of this month, and the licence is just a total rip off .

| the TV licence really bugs me too. We keep talking about doing without a tv, just haven't got round to putting it into action - while it's there, it gets used.

The dreaded TV licence - it's the one bill I really hate paying.
I read somewhere recently that if you view live streaming of a football match aired by the BBC on the INTERNET, then that constitutes needing a TV licence too! Apparently this came about when people at work were watching a particular game on their pc's.

We haven't had 'telly' as such for about 4 years. We have a TV, but no ariel - it's just connected to a DVD player. Back in the UK, I found myself getting really irritated with TV, but it's much worse here in Italy, so don't miss it at all.
Of an evening, we tend to sit and watch a film in the winter, but summer evenings we stay outside playing cards, scrabble etc.. Occasionally, we string up a sheet and have a 'cinema night' with the DVD player and a projector.
If you're considering getting rid of the telly, just unplug it for a couple of weeks and see how you get on. A friend years ago sold his telly and regretted it within a week and had to go and buy a new one.

Doh! Why didn't we think of that? Thanks for the idea contadino! Sounds like a good one.
I think what bugs me with the TV is that you get drawn into watching rubbish, just because it's on and it's such a conversation killer.
I remember being somewhere one christmas and spent the afternoon constantly being told to 'shush' because there was something on the TV. I hadn't seen these people for ages and I wanted to have a bit of a chin-wag and catch up on the goss. But no, apparently TV was more important.

I once phoned my parents on Christmas day to wish them Merry Christmas to be told to call back later as Nigel Mansell was on TV. Now he may be a nice chap, but he isn't related, and they could've recorded it.
