Hello there I was just wondering if any of you sell eggs at the gate and how much do you charge for your eggs. We have regular customers in our village and we charge 90p for 6. However the price of our chicken food has gone through the roof in the last 2 weeks, and when I sat down and worked out how much it costs to produce an egg ( not taking into account my time and effort ) it turns out we are selling them at a loss. I have got to put them up to £1.10 for 6 just to break even. I am looking at other feed options anyone got any ideas?? We feed organic layers pellets in the morning and mixed corn in the evening. byeeee

Hi Wendy,we sold ours for £1.40 doz,now putting them upto £1.60, we feed ours on organic feed the same as you but subsidise it with vegetable leftovers which my wife can get from her work and whats left from the kitchen, also starting now they will have grass cuttings from the garden and some of the local verges that I can cut with my sit on mower, I also give them sods that are dug out of the garden for them to scrat in and pick the worms out of.

Hi thanks for the reply
Our chickens free range over 4 acres and we too give extras from our left over veg from the kitchen. I think we will just have to increase the egg price. I have just got back from a quick snoop round sainsburys and their free range eggs are selling for £1.78 for 6. Their woodland free range are selling for £1.58 for 6 and their organic free-range are 2.09 for 6. Although our eggs are organic free -range we are not soil association certified( too expensive for us to go down that road )so we cant market them as such!!. I think our poor village dwellers are in for a bit of a shock when I put the eggs out today .Know wonder they fly of the stand!! I really must get out more I very rarely go into the supermarket but sometimes you have to have a look at what is going on out there Thanks again I hope you have done all your repairs, but do you ever really finish I think not Byeeeeeeee

Just a quick up date
After going through our feed bills we had to put up our egg price at the gate.
We had been selling at 90p for 6. We are now selling at £1.20 for 6.
We sold all our eggs today

| Eggs still selling very well at £1.20 for 6 and we are able to buy the feed at no cost to us again. So we get our eggs for free ( well if you add the cost of our time and care not free very expensive but we love it). Reporting from sunny norfolk>

He is my Belgium barbu d uccle bantam I have been breeding them for 15 years.
You can keep them on a small gardens because they are so small and they have feathered feet which means they can't scratch like chicken so do not turn over the land. They love to be handled so are great with children or people who are scared of chickens.
I would never be without them they are a joy to own.

We sell our eggs for 1.50 doz and some didn't like to pay that. It's getting to the point now that we may have to put the price up again as the price of feed is still going higher.
We also give our chickens potatoes boiled and any other veg peelings we have and they love it.
