Hi piggy breeder

Where did june go!!

Hows the chutney going and the shows.

We have had a bit of bad news down here a dog got on to my holding and killed all of my winter hatchings and all of my rare breed bantams. A total shock.  The holding was quiet today no cocks crowing and no hens clucking all of us are in shock.

Total cost in replacement of birds is £219.00 but in emotional terms priceless!!

And great mourning among in the smallholding.

We caught the dog and its owner, I liked the dog better than the owner, some people should never have animals.

But on a good note we have a little grey fergie and topper. its a fast little tractor I am learning to drive and hande it. Nearly went through a closed gate but got it out of gear in time to stand on the brake!!

Never a dull moment on a smallholding.

hi Wendy, sorry to hear about your chucks,:(

Sounds like you had fun on the fergie,  be a bit of a twitching moment as you approached the gate though:shock:

The chutneys are doing well . Ive done a few shows but its difficult to do the amount I want to due to work..

Been busy with , fencing , planting, weeding, cleaning out animals, making chutney , cutting wood for the fire etc. no dull moments at the minute .

Taking a couple of pigs to slaughter next week so that means another job jointing and packing them. Still thats what smallholding is all about .:D

Hi Im here

dealing with dog killing chickens!!! some people should not have animals!!!!.

Sorry a long story but had to get that off my chest.

Got a new tractor well old a ferguson T20 and a new topper great fun and halved the mowing time hurray.

Lots to tell the turkeys are doing well the dog did't go near them thankfully.

we have visiting deer taking a likeing to our spinney   and now they are at our door !! shocked me when I went out into the garden and I walked right pass them and they only moved a bit and then carried on eating the hazel  well I can spare a few hazel but not all! cheeky.

Hi piggybreeder

Good luck with the pigs

I had one of our pigs back whole (well split down the middle) and jointed the lot.

Hard work took all day the next day did the burgers sausages. the next day, hams liver pate, mince  and packed all into the freezer in 2 man portions.

I am glad I did it because now I know ( and so do the butchers) what I am missing!! tenderloins and belly end seen an easy thing to half inch. Not to mention the caul fat

that they  like for their faggots I use it to wrap the tenderloin in  before cooking .

Like you say so much to do and I would like to do more but no time!!! only 10years till retirement!! and them watch this space:D

Hi Wendy, hows things ?
I've just made 10 jars of tom & chilli chutney, laying a new patio, and trying to clear 1/2 an allotment plot of plum tree suckers, I've done the easy bit and felled them all. now I've got to log them and remove. I'm leaving the digging out of the stumps to my son and his pal who where mad enough to take the plot on

Hi robby

You have been busy!! Think of all the  plums next year.

We have cropped the toms and  made tomato ketchup for the first time you need a lot of toms to make one jar unlike chutney, and made a load of tomato sauce for the freezer. Beans sweetcorn carrots beetroot onions and peppers and of course potatoes are cropping well and we are enjoying the fruits of our labour . Turkeys are already looking ready for the pot and loads more coming on the turkeys have been a real success. We now have muscoveys a cross between a duck and a goose good egg layers and also good meat birds. The hens are laying well and paying for all the food  for all our young stock and growers with their egg sales at the gate.  Building new houses for the tractor a little grey fergie and all the implements we need to house. Holiday a dim distant dream but hey we are happy.

Glad your still here where are all the others ??

I thought I'd been busy !

Dunno where everyone else is I tend to pop in once a week to keep up with the posts, I mod on another forum so that takes up most of my pc time.

Will you be slaughtering the Turkeys yourself or will they be sent away ?

Hi again r

Still quiet around he :?  Yes we are always busy and no the turkeys will not be sent away. We want to keep the whole thing of rearing for the table as stress free for the birds as possible.  We went on a training course with the local smallholder group to learn how to dispatch birds for the table and for dealing with accidents ( which is nearly always people who allow their dogs to roam and kill  or mangle chickens or foxes leaving the birds beyond repair and dying).  As for the turkeys for the table it is not an easy thing to do and we have had 3 different ways shown to us from the people who do it for a living. I am now happy to carry out the act knowing it will be quick and affective.  Having said all that it is hard to rear and then kill your own birds,. So when the day comes I will quietly herd them into a pen and keep them calm and a friend who does this for a living will be doing the dispatching it is all over before you know it.  I think all people who eat meat should know how it is produced and dispatched thats why I chose to do it myself.  In return when the time comes for my freinds turkeys to go I will dispatch and she will herd;) Joining a smallholders group is the best way to learn all these skills.;)
