Want to save money and be healthier in 2008? You could probably feed yourself and your family for next to nothing by growing your own fruit and vegetables and improve the quality of your life.

'Vegetable growing is going through the roof,' says professional gardener Bob Flowerdew. 'Ten years ago very few people wanted to grow vegetables but now every family wants to do it.'

Ideally you would have your own garden for the veg patch but if you don't, there are 300,000 allotments UK-wide, available at an average rent of £29 per year.

Admittedly, it could take years to get to the top of a waiting list so, if all else fails, try putting plants in containers on window ledges or pots by the front door - it is surprising just how much you can grow in pots, including tomatoes, peppers and herbs.

Im 44 and have been growing veg for the last 30 years. This dosent make me an expert, but I get great pleasure out of providing food for my family and also knowing that there are no chemicals in the food we are eating. Its not just about saving money as the amount of labour that is put into producinc your own food far outways the savings made from supermarket shopping.

Hi, i just started a line on livestock section and mentioned i wanted to start growing veg this year but it has to be in grow bags and pots. so any advise on what to grow would be appreciated. I was thinking of starting with Tomatoes, runner beans and carrotts and maybe lettuces and cabbages and also strawberries for hanging baskets but don't want to over do things as i do work full time as well. so any help appreciated.
