:D Hi Everyone

Just wanted to let everyone know I have acquired my two chickens and they seem to have settled into their new home really well.  They are Light Sussex bantams about 7 months old.  So I am eagerly awaiting some eggs. They have been named by my husband after his mother Lola and my mother June but I have to say neither of them were too impressed about havng a chicken named after them!

I'll let you know when I get my first eggs

Hi Kooljule

Lola and June look fabulous!

At least you didn't buy dogs and name after your parents! Now, that would have been worse!

:? Hi Folks

June and Lola seem to have settled into their new home well, they have free range of the garden and will come and eat out of my hand when I have some tasty treats for them.  They still haven't layed any eggs though, am I being impatient or should I be worried?

I am feeding them on layers pellets, which they don't seem to eat that much of and are not really that impressed with them.  I give them a handful of mixed corn in the evening and they really like that.  They are wandering about in the garden all day foraging and seem to be eating worms and other insects. As I am writing this on my laptop at the door to the garden they are sitting on the step looking at me to see if I'll give them something more tasty than layers pellets I think!

Any advice anyone?

Cheers

Hi again

All chickens like mixed corn but too much is bad for them, although they will beg for more ( a bit like us with chocolate) they need the layers pellets for the protein although this time of the year they are getting insects worms slugs etc so will not need as much layers pellets. Feed bread left over from the kitchen also pasta potatoes etc this time of the year they can almost look after themselves as long as they are really free range?? In the winter they really need all the food you can give them but now  let them get on with it. All this is based on a good acre of free range for 30 chickens plus offspring;):D

:) Thanks Wendy. I'll just let them get on with it then, they do have free range of the whole garden, I only got two chickens because the garden isn't that big, but it seems to be ok for just the two of them.  One day we hope to buy a place with some land big enough to have lots more chickens and other livestock.  It's not easy finding somewhere affordable around here as the credit crunch hasn't really affected the housing market here yet anyway.  I live in the Lake District about 5 minutes from lake Derwentwater - we keep looking though :)

Thanks again for the advice
