Hi
Just joined first time at anything like this. We're in the process of purchasing a small holding in Devon and it has an ag tie on it. We already have a little land and have three/four different types of chickens and a local farmer uses it for grazing for his sheep. Other than that we have no experience. We would like to have a couple of pigs and some sheep on the smallholding along with chickens. Will this suffice? Can anyone point me in the right direction with informaton? Also what are the major set backs of having an ag tie and are there any benefits?
Many thanks
Michelle

Hi Michelle welcome to the forum
Dont know much about these Ag ties but I think it something to do with how you source your main income, it must be from an Ag related background. Loads of info on google, I can remember it coming up on another forum I'm on.
Good luck with your small holding ( insert green envious smilie at this point )

Welcome to the world of smallholding.
You will never be bored again Chapter 7 on the Internet just google it they give all sorts of free info on planning and ties on smallholding and land. I think the same as last reply you have to earn your main income from the land which unfortunately means some sort of high production. Eggs/veg/meat. All this will have to be set up in accordances with defra rules and regs. Boring but it has to be done and they change their minds a lot and you have to keep yourself updated by visiting their web news page!!. Unfortunately because of blue tongue foot and mouth and avian flu there a lot of restrictions on the movement of stock depending where you live . You will have to start with a holding number and flock number and herd number if you are going to keep sheep/ pigs etc. All info obtained through defra web site. We keep pigs chickens turkeys and grow veg but we could never make a living out of it so we both have full time jobs as well. We just want to be semi self sufficient we are nearly there. We do sell eggs at the gate that pays for the feed of the chicken and the food for the young stock but no profit But we love it just. Hope this helps best thing to do is join a smallholders group they support each other . Good luck

Thank-you both for your advice. We've enrolled on a smallholders course at a local agr. college at the end of the month so hopefully we'll meet other likeminded people and gain lots of advice.
We are already registered with defra for the land we own but did'nt realise we needed to register the chickens etc. We were going to wait before we got some livestock until we moved in. Does anyone think its a good idea to get some before on our field to meet the ag. tie? I spend alot of time up there as I only work one day a week, but I can't see how you're supposed to earn a living out of it only to become self sufficient which is great!! Not what you'd call main income but spending most of time which I suppose is main job!
Many thanks Michelle

Hi there, I saw your posting. I've been trying to find a smallholder course and wondered if the one you've found might be near us, which is Hamphshire / Wiltshire borders - our local agricultural college is Sparsholt but the last one they tried to run was cancelled because they didn't get enough people.
Your move sounds very exciting. Hope it goes as well for you.

Hi Michelle
To answer you last question.
Please please do not have pigs sheep or any live stock before you move in. They have a habit of getting into trouble even when you are on site so if you are away who Knows what could happen (and it will). You should do your home work regarding the agri ties anyway. I am sure you have to prove a living from the land. I wish you luck of course, but fore armed is fore warned. Also make sure your insurance cover is for public liability for your live stock because there are a lot of people out there who think, your land is their land but if one of your animals harms them it is down to you to foot the bill regardless of their behaviour. You can get a flock and herd number before you get the stock. Also there is a movement licence to get. Look all this may seem all too much but once it is in place it is no longer a problem but it has to be done long before the animals arrive. All this will be explained on your smallholders course good luck it really is rewarding once you get the hang of things

Hi Thanks again for the advise its becoming invaluable. Thanks wendy thought it would be a bad idea. The course we're on is held in Devon at Bicton Agricultural College near Budleigh Salterton. Its two days 26/27 (sat/sun) April and costs £195.00 each. Lovely area so maybe you could make a weekend out of it.
Thanks again Michelle

Hi just wanted to say that the beginners smallholding course that we went to last weekend was fantastic!! If anyone is starting out or just wants to know what their letting themselves into then this is a good start. Bicton was a great venue with excellent facilities. They are going to be running lots of other courses as well, more indepth on certain subjects so check out their website if your interested.
